Prayer with fasting is an expression of repentance.
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land”. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
As we mediate on this scripture, given by the Lord to Solomon after he had dedicated the temple, we can sense the importance of these words today as we enter a season of prayer and fasting for marriage in our nation.
Recently 2 Chronicles 7:14 was given to me as part of a prophetic word about God’s heart to see restoration and strengthening of marriages within Christian homes.
From Genesis to Revelation the declaration of God’s word is that marriage is between a man and a woman. The concept of husband and wife is at the very heart of God’s ordained order and especially because it points to the fulfilment of Christ as our Bridegroom laying down His life for His eternal Bride. The words of the Song of Songs portray the passion and devotion of the Bridegroom King as He yearns to consecrate the union with His Beloved.
2 Chronicles 7:14 begins with a conditional word – IF. The Lord promises to respond in three ways if we obey Him in four powerful instructions. The words are spoken to us His people, not the unsaved. The literal Hebrew translation is ‘My people upon whom My name is called’.
We are to approach the throne in lowly humble submission, coming to the mercy seat in prayer and a deeper level of consecration as we seek His face. This face to face encounter speaks of intimacy, adoration and worship, of personal relationship rather than religious exercise, hearing the Father’s voice and obeying. The more we draw near the more we are convicted to turn away from our sin and walk in obedience to the Father. The Lord’s promise that He will hear us gives great hope and comfort and speaks of His profound love as He declares forgiveness.
In the context of this month’s call for prayer, the land to be healed is that which we are defending; the holy ground of marriage as ordained by God.
We in the church are witnesses of the Father’s heavenly plan for marriage and family but we have not always been examples to those whose lives intertwine with us on earth. We have allowed the ungodly temptations and influences of the world to intrude into the divine pattern, so that others do not see our marriages as a light shining in a dark place. 2 Peter 1:19
When God created male and female in His own image, the first thing He did was bless them, with a blessing to be fruitful and multiply as recorded in Genesis 1:28.
When God created woman He did not bring her forth from the dust as He had with the man, but created her from the man’s flesh and bone, symbolically showing us that His divine plan would be for them to become one flesh as stated in Genesis 2:24.
The mystical connection between marriage and the church of which Christ is head is outlined in Ephesians 5:22-33.
Jesus longs to come and take away His Bride to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Come Lord Jesus!
Father, we thank You for the glorious gift of marriage and family as the foundation of our society and we humbly repent where we have not fulfilled all that You ordained in this sacred covenant.
We ask that you bring healing and restoration to our marriages, that we your church would be an example of all you have called us to be as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers.
Grant us strategic and revelatory keys as to how to intercede to protect marriage in our nation, so that your grace and favour would be bestowed upon us as a people. Bless and protect the sanctity of marriage.
We declare John 3:20-21 – “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done through God”.
