Marriage is a lifelong spiritual process of growing together and discovering God’s will.
“Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning; for in you do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift my soul to you” (Psalm 143:8).
In a Christian marriage, the Bride and the Groom freely and knowingly choose each other. The freedom to choose is foundational to the Sacrament of Marriage. Marriage is considered as a vocation. It is a vocation to which one is drawn and one is always called to respond in complete freedom. In marriage, a couple grow together to become who they are called to be as individuals. It is a spiritual reality. Bride and Groom choose each other so as to grow into the fullness of being that each has it in themselves to become. It is not an easy choice. It is often challenging. It can be a struggle. Their lives, together as one, become a spiritual path that captures the soul of each person and leads to God.
In this Psalm we hear and feel the call of loving kindness and glimpse the liberating trust that nurtures wholeness. The psalmist asks God to speak in the language of kindness in the morning, at the beginning of each day, at the outset of all things. It is a psalm which points to the ground of reliance that the soul has with God and reflects the trust which lies at the heart of the marriage bond. As a soul trusts in God, so the beloved trusts in the lover. The two are in each other’s confidence and each relies on the other to know the way to walk.
In choosing Christian marriage, a woman and a man enter a process of lifelong discernment together. In this lifelong process, in this ‘for all time’ commitment, the two encounter Reality together. They discern what it is they deeply desire. They discern together what it is they really want, how they are to become, where they need to spend their energy, how they are to serve each other and those around them. They choose to begin a process of discerning and discovering God’s Will for them both, in and with and through the other. Together, as one, their spiritual life becomes the one true, clear enough reason to get a person up in the morning. Trusting in each other, they grow in insight and develop in understanding and advance in wisdom. They are plunged into life with all its struggles and demands and they turn to each other to know the way to walk. They turn over the hard soil of their hearts and become open to authentic growth. They begin the path to holiness.
Lord, may we be people who can talk to each other in the voice of loving kindness. May we trust in each other and show each other the way to walk. May we become less and less concerned with those things which distract us from what truly matters. May we launch each other on the road to the Beloved, to God the Groom who calls the soul – Bride. May each beat of our hearts orient our souls to each other and to God, may we plunge ourselves into life and trust that God is with us through all that may come. May our love for each other increase in us and nurture a longing for God, our true hearts Beloved. We make this prayer in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
