Jesus values human life and we, his followers, must choose to do the same.
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:15-17).
The value of human life, from conception to the grave, is currently being strongly challenged in Queensland. This is in direct contrast to the call of God throughout the scriptures for his people to choose life. In the truest sense, we choose life when we choose to follow the one who is the giver of life. We were created by him, for him. Jesus said to his disciples, “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6). If we choose to follow him, we must in turn choose the things that he values. And so, in what ways do we choose life? By choosing the things that he values. We know without a doubt that Jesus values physical human life, because not only is he the way, the truth and the life, we have just read in Colossians 1 that he is the creator of life and the very sustainer of life.
Knowing that Jesus values human life, and that he calls on his followers to be a voice for the voiceless, his followers must not cease to be outspoken in their opposition to the cavalier attitude that would disregard the life of an infant that he has created in the womb. How can we not stand up to defend those who cannot defend themselves? Proverbs 31:8 says we are to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves”. With the current push towards euthanasia, this verse just as equally applies to those who are aged, infirmed, depressed, and who feel their lives are not worth living. God is a God of life and he calls us to choose his way – his life.
Dear Heavenly Father, we approach your throne of grace boldly, through the name of Jesus Christ, who is life. We pray today that you will give us the heart to choose life, and in choosing life, to choose you and to choose those things that bring joy to your heart. We ask that you will be gracious to us and cause the plan to introduce radical abortion and euthanasia laws to fail. Use us in your plans as you will. Amen.
