DAY 9: Make a Difference With Jesus

DAY 9: Make a Difference With Jesus

by Pastor Simon Mackenzie, Living Water Lutheran Church, on behalf of Bishop John Henderson, Lutheran Church of Australia

Intention:
We need courage to admit our impurity and brokenness and courage to do something about it.

Scripture:
There are some words from the book of Deuteronomy that every Christian should heed.

“Do not say in your heart…’it is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’… Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your hearts are you going in to possess the land…” (Deuteronomy 9:4,5)

Reflection:
Reading these words of God are sobering. They leave no way out. They declare, “I am no better than the guy down the street who is addicted to drugs or the wife who abuses her husband.”

Male or Female, young or old, none are pure. It has always been in our nature to blame someone else for our problems. Few have the courage to acknowledge that impurity and brokenness are deep-seated personal issues that we must all face. Otherwise we are part of the problem.

By God’s measure we are all less than perfect, unclean, unwholesome and impure. We all deserve to be written off as refuse to be burnt. As Romans 3:23 says in very direct words, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” We are all broken people living in a world of our own brokenness.

If you balk at such a statement, then, haven’t you become part of the problem?

Like so many on-lookers staring at a serious accident, there are plenty of people discussing the incident, there are plenty of people grieved, there are plenty of cynical people too. All thinking how glad they are that it wasn’t them. But how many people are doing something, helping, daring to make a change, a difference; to save lives, for the better?

God needs people who are willing to get their hands dirty. People willing to team-up and dig-in. To work at fixing the problem of broken lives in our broken world.

So, when was the last time you stepped into the brokenness of people’s lives, rather than adopting a hands-off approach?

When was the last time you actually made a conscious intentional difference in the world around you? The kind of difference Jesus made for all of us, when he died, to set things right with God and us?

God calls Christians to show the world how much difference Jesus can really make. Yes, some will laugh. Yes, some will put Christians down. Yes, some will hate us for getting our hands dirty.

But the fruit will bear testimony: in lives saved, lives changed, families restored, broken hearts healed, people cleansed of the muck and filth that has ravaged their very being and lives.

All these changes in people’s lives will bear witness and give testimony to the grace of God. The grace of God which has the power to transform, to restore, to cleanse and to make us whole and pure again. If we but do what Jesus asks and get out there into the world, we can make a lasting difference.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, as you declare in the Old Testament, we are all broken and unwholesome. And yet, we thank and praise you for being willing to suffer, even die, for us, on the cross of Calvary. Through Jesus’ willingness to meet us where we are at, we are now being cleansed by your perfect sacrifice, your death and resurrection for us.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your purity now entering our hearts and lives and liberating us from our own brokenness. Stir us to be instruments of your peace in the world around us. Stir us to be willing to show others what it means to be purified and made whole in Jesus’ name. So that others may be purified of everything that is broken and unwholesome in their lives. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)
