DAY 19: Pray, Fast and Repent in Oneness for Revival

DAY 19: Pray, Fast and Repent in Oneness for Revival

by Pastor Peter Walker, Founder, Australian Indigenous Christian Ministries

Intention:
We pray for oneness starting in the church that we might in turn affect the nation through the “Spirit of Christ” (Romans 8:9) until we together become “the one new man in Christ” (Ephesians 2:15).

Scripture:
“Therefore also now, says the LORD, turn you even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

And tear your hearts, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and relents from sending calamity. …

Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:

Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that nurse: let the bridegroom go forth from his chamber, and the bride out of her chamber.

Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, “Spare your people, O LORD, and give not your heritage to reproach, that the nations should rule over them: why should they say among the people, ‘Where is their God?’ ”
(Joel 2:12-13,15-17)

Reflection:
My wife and I had the joy to be the co-conveners with other brothers and sisters in Christ of a Solemn Assembly in Casino in Northern NSW on 21–23 September. Casino is part of my tribal and family country which comprises the Bundjalung people. Their tribal area went out to Warwick and up to South Brisbane Beaudesert area.

We have held these special prayer events which includes both Indigenous and non-indigenous believers in several areas of Australia including Alice Springs in 2016. Our Solemn Assemblies takes their inspiration from the prophet Joel’s call for a Solemn Assembly for the people of Israel to gather to repent of their sins and seek God.

It is my firm belief that repentance is the key to national revival and reformation that we so desperately need. I had the privilege of leading the Praise Corroborree at Parliament House which was a 72-hour cross-cultural prayer & worship gathering to glorify God from 1996 up until 2000.

Our foundational verse was 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Twenty years later our need to seek God together and repent on behalf of our sins both in the Church and in broader society has never been greater.

Within our own Aboriginal community the need for prayer and repentance among indigenous Christians has also never been greater. We, as indigenous Christians, cannot point the finger at others because when we do there are always three fingers pointing back at us. Unity is also a critical key to revival and reformation in both the church and the nation as exemplified in Psalm 133:1, “How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity!”

More than “unity” we need ‘oneness’. To understand ‘oneness’ we have to turn to the words of Jesus found in John 17:21, “I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one–as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.”

I congratulate my Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ for calling us to pray and fast for marriage and family again this year in October 2018. Marriage and family are important to God. Marriage and family are the building blocks of both our church and our nation.

You see in Ephesians 5:32 we read “marriage is the mystery of Christ and the church.” Marriage is the foundation for families and families come from heaven as Paul explains in Ephesians 3:14, “From whom all families in heaven and earth take their name.” This month of Prayer and Fasting for marriage and family with repentance is a critical part of our journey in God to our nation becoming what Paul describes in Ephesians 2:15 “the one new man in Christ.”

At the end of the Solemn Assembly this Caucasian sister grabbed me by the arm and said to me, “Peter, after this unified time of prayer and repentance at this Solemn Assembly we are truly one now.” That is my prayer for Australia.

Prayer:
Dear God, we cry out to you to forgive us our sins as a nation.

Forgive me for my own sin and selfishness. Heal me of a hard heart and create a new heart in me.

Give me the gift of repentance so I can declare the words found in Psalm 24, “Lift up your heads, O you gates; and be you lifted up, you everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.”

Oh God hear our prayers. We pray for oneness starting in the church that we might in turn affect the nation through the “Spirit of Christ.” Till we together become “the one new man in Christ.”

We pray for an end to the drought and blessings on our government especially our new Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. More than anything else we pray for the rain of the Holy Spirit to bring revival and reformation to our nation in JESUS’ NAME!

Pray Three Things for Prime Minister Scott Morrison

We now have a committed Christian as PM!

Scott Morrison needs our daily prayers. Better still, many ties a day – whenever his name comes up in your thoughts, in your conversations and in the news. Please pray as often as possible, as he establishes his leadership to restore a stable Government and especially as he responds to attacks against him.

Here are three suggested prayer points –

  1. That he would continue to fear God and seek God’s wisdom in all his decisions as the Prime Minister.
  2. That God would bless him and his wife and his marriage and bless his children and keep them safe – spiritually, emotionally, physically.
  3. That he would continue to lead in prayer for the challenges that face us as a nation as he has already done by calling for prayer to end the drought.

May our voices be heard in heaven! And may God bless you as you pray.
