DAY 29: The Battle is the Lord’s

DAY 29: The Battle is the Lord’s

by Darryl Stewart, Convenor , Kingdom Connections Illawarra

Intention:
In a rapidly changing world we need God more than ever.

Scripture:
“Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). 3Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. 4The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.” (2 Chronicles 20:2-4)

Reflection:
The comfortable world we lived in as Christians is changing faster than we could have ever imagined.

Horror stories abound and pleas for help multiply. It can all be too much. Our world seems to be caving in. Taking responsibility and fighting back can be heartbreaking.

Long ago in 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat found his world about to cave in. Judah was about to be invaded by a coalition of three nations.

The king took action and lead the nation in prayer and fasting. Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah.

His prayer had four parts

Praise
“Lord, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven?  You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you

Promises
If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgement, or plague or  famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us

Problem
For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

Pause
All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the Lord.

A little known prophet spoke up and said a couple of important things:
Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army.
For the battle is not yours, but God’s.
Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you

The rest is history. The king sent the choir out ahead of the army, and they watched the confusion as the coalition of the three attacking nations destroyed each other.

Jehoshaphat’s prayer is a great model: Praise, Promises, Problem, Pause.

Let us remember, “The battle is not yours but God’s”.

Prayer:
Father, we feel overwhelmed at times with the many issues we face. Our nation seems beset by evil. We simply don’t know what to do. Jehoshaphat was very honest in his prayer when he said, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” So today we thank you for your precious promises. The battle is not ours but yours, in Jesus Name, Amen!
