Ten People Trying to Shut Folau Down

6 MINS

Since the re-definition of marriage, no one is denying the validity of the “slippery-slope” argument anymore. Instead, they’re simply shaking their heads and wondering, “Has the world has gone mad?!” It seems as though the world is hurtling down the slope faster than the Gadarene swine. Media pundits, business leaders, as well as current—and former—sporting heroes all seem to be in front of the pack but, as Andrew Bolt rightly points out, one of the most galling aspects is how much Australians are being silenced by the leftist cultural elites.

EDITORIAL: Many Australians are just sick to the back teeth of the 'shut up brigade'. And for them, Christians and non-Christians, people who dislike gays or embrace them, Folau is their manMORE: https://bit.ly/2z3gOi1 #theboltreport

Posted by The Bolt Report on Tuesday, 25 June 2019

This was undoubtedly Bolt at his finest. However, let me attempt to further cut through all the white-noise surrounding the issue by suggesting a list of ten people—or various corporations—who have pitilessly joined in on the “pack-attack” against Folau:

1. Raelene Castle and Rugby Australia. You know we’re living in strange times when Peter Singer—the atheist and infamous Princeton ethicist—comes to the defence of a devout Christian such as Folau. But that’s precisely what he did when he accused Rugby Australia of kicking an “own goal”. As Singer writes:

As this example shows – and as John Stuart Mill argued in his classic On Liberty – once we allow, as a ground for restricting someone’s freedom of speech or action, the claim that someone else has been offended by it, freedom is in grave danger of disappearing entirely. After all, it is very difficult to say anything significant to which no one could possibly take offense. Mill had in mind restrictions imposed by the state, but when employers dismiss employees who make controversial utterances, that is also a threat to freedom of expression – especially when the employer has a monopoly on the employment of workers with special skills, as Rugby Australia does.

2. GoFundMe. This will go down as one of the most spectacular backfires in Australian corporate history. Like the Roman Emperor, Nero, who set fire to Christians as human torches, GoFundMe lit up Folau as a martyr for his Christian faith. Because as Jai Bednall at news.com.au explained:

GoFundMe — with its rainbow flag flying — gave the Folau camp the biggest handball he’s received since a short stint with the GWS Giants. They punted his page and sparked a situation the anti-Folau mob feared most.

Not only the perception of Folau the Persecuted, but a feeling among the public it was being controlled.

Because if there’s one thing Australians have more in common than cash, it’s a hatred of being told what they can and can’t do.

3. Roy Masters. While I didn’t know that Masters was still alive(!) the former rugby league coach of Wests (1978-81) and the Dragons (1982-87) wrote in The Sydney Morning Herald, “What’s the odds any surplus would have been used to buy another property?” But as Neil James Foster, associate professor at Newcastle University, wrote on Facebook:

This is a disgraceful article attacking Israel Folau. It claims he “abandoned the Wallabies in a World Cup year”. Umm, no, RA abandoned him for his comments based on his religious beliefs expressed on his own social media page. And then it basically says he is a liar by suggesting that any “surplus” from his attempt to raise funds to defend himself in a fight instituted by RA, would have been used to buy another house. No, the now closed GFM site clearly indicated that the funds would be used for legal proceedings, it just said that donors did not have the right to direct *how* the legal proceedings should be run.

4. Peter Beattie. The Chairman of the ARL Commission really threw Folau into the fiery furnace when he prohibited him from even returning to Rugby League. Cue the progressive Newspeak that, “We are an inclusive game with respect for all…” If only Folau had committed a less serious crime such as sexual assault, domestic violence or even just drug abuse. But paraphrasing a passage of the Bible is apparently a bridge too far for the ARL.

5. Peter FitzSimons. There’s probably not a week that goes by where FitzSimons doesn’t have a shot at either Folau or the religious in one form or another. But as Andrew Bolt pointed out above, FitzSimons was “typically unfair” and “typically wrong” in saying that the majority of the Australian people would not support Folau. What’s more, as Rita Panahi wrote in the Herald Sun:

The Folaus should thank their many high-profile media detractors, from preachy commentators determined to miss the point to former sportspeople suffering relevance deprivation syndrome to a grown man who inexplicably dresses like a pirate and gets everything wrong.

6. Drew Mitchell. Who needs enemies when you’ve got former teammates like this? Rather than give Folau a call to discuss the issue, instead of putting his body on the line, Mitchell retreated to the safety of Twitter.

But as Will Swanton wrote about Mitchell’s tweet in The Australian:

That’s an extraordinarily bitter and juvenile message from one ex-Wallaby to another. The more I think about it, the more it comes across as complete nonsense. 1. Mitchell says Folau has broken the terms of his contract. I’m guessing Mitchell has not laid eyes on Folau’s contract. 2. Mitchell says the ill and injured children are in a position they have not chosen. Is he implying that Folau thinks differently? 3. Mitchell accuses Folau of believing he deserves money more than those kids. When has Folau said this? 4. Mitchell says the matter is now about Folau’s greed. That’s a big call. A personal call. A nasty call. Made from a distance. Folau’s response? Again, respectful silence.

7. Liz Ellis. Things definitely took a turn for the worse when Ellis had a go at Folau’s wife. But then Ellis swiftly backpedalled on her original statement that it was “not good enough” for Netball administrators to let Maria Folau offer public support to her husband. And in an article—published in Fairfax Media no less—Ellis wrote:

I understand that my tweet was interpreted to mean specifically that Maria was not welcome. I get it. It was poorly worded from that point of view. I am devastated to think that the way I wrote it may have suggested the sort of bigotry that I passionately dislike. I don’t want to fight bigotry with bigotry.

8. The ANZ Bank. Whereas Liz Ellis had the good sense to back down somewhat, the ANZ bank doubled-down on the issue. I know, I know especially after the Royal Commission into the unethical behaviour of our banking system. One can’t help but feel that it’s a bit rich—pun intended—for this bank in particular to be taking the high moral ground on anything. But this is the ‘wokeocracy’ we’re talking about here and having been blinded by their own virtue-signalling that’s precisely what they did. As Jack Houghton wrote in The Daily Telegraph:

… ANZ — the largest sponsor of New Zealand’s domestic netball competition — revealed it approached Maria’s bosses to complain because the Kiwi athlete had shared a link to the fundraiser of her husband, who is engaged in an unlawful termination claim against Rugby Australia.

“We do not support the views of Silver Fern Maria Folau and have made our views known to her employer Netball NZ,” ANZ media manager Stefan Herrick said in a statement.

Further, according to The Australian, the Health Insurance company HCF—the sponsor of Maria Folau’s team the Adelaide Thunderbirds—has also publicly denounced her stance in supporting her husband. But note the latent hypocrisy in their media statement (emphasis mine):

There is no place in our society for discrimination of any kind, including on the basis of gender, religious belief, age, race or sexual orientation.

9. Peter van Onselen. You’ve gotta hand it to PVO. He really knows how to lay the boot in, especially when he knows that it’s completely safe to do so. As soon as Folau had his contract with Rugby Australia torn up, van Onselen tweeted:

10. Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese. Unfortunately, both the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader have refused to be drawn on the issue with Scott Morrison claiming that, “It has already had enough oxygen”. But as Martyn Iles, the Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby, rightly argued, “they cannot wash their hands’’ of Israel Folau’s case “like Pontius Pilate”.

Now, there’s a number of other examples I could have given, but I think this particular Decalogue makes the point. It is now demonstrably clear that our media and cultural elites think that people, particular of religious faith, need to simply shut-up and stay hidden in the closest.

However, it’s once again time for all of those proverbial “quiet Australians”, just as they did on May 18, to start speaking up while we still have the chance.

      Hi Helen
I have been intending to send just such an email to Mr Morrison since the election, so I just did it. I am one of those praying Christians and gave out flyers for a Christian candidate on election day. That underdog candidate got in against all expectations. I was there ALL day but didn’t see that person, and am yet to hear a thank you from him. I forgive him, but it makes me sad. However I hear Christians are joining the LNP in droves in order to one day stand for election. So at least if the current crop let us down, there may be better ones ready to take up the slack.Let’s pray for them.

It to mention Qantas CEO who should be at the top of the list for his hand in Izzy’s dismissal.
The ARU are inclusive unless you are Christian or hold different views to them. It is ok to be a a drug user, a thug, or even engage in domestic violence. You keep your contract intact. But woe the devout Christian who quotes a bible verse on social media.

I too was surprised the gay Irish leprechaun CEO of QANTAS was not at the top of the list in this article. It’s time the shareholders of QANTAS gave JOYCE a ticket back to Ireland. I’m sure the IRISH RUGBY UNION World cup team will welcome him home as a hero for removing the very best of the Wallabies just before the World cup. Next Joyce will be demanding equal representation of LGBGTIXYZ + P(pedophiles) in the Wallabies team.

Looks like Prime Minister Morrison may be counting the cost of his christian faith. It costs to be True to Jesus. He needs to keep his eyes firmly on the goal. Jesus will do the rest if he only trusts him. Unfortunatly in the political game the earthly temptation is strong once they get into power

Imho, it’s time Scomo tried true leadership, not just political posturing. Has anyone realised that Israel Folau has possibly done more to evangelise Australia than anyone since Billy Graham, who has also been pilloried by many. It’s time in view of the imminent harpazo of true Christians, that we showed support, vocal and financial, for our fellows. What is YOUR testimony? Folau’s is clear…

the groups I pray with were not surprised. We trusted in our Lord to have a practising Christian Prime Minister of Australia.God put him there and he will stay there until God decides to let him go.
Now He has raised up Israel to do his part and he has done it in spectacular fashion. God is moving in Australia so let us

I have the deepest respect for him and truly love the fact so many Aussies have come to his support.
RA has brought rugby to a new low and significant changes are long overdue and I pray this may be a catalyst for change at the highest level.
With the RWC imminent losing a player of Izzy’s caliber is sheer madness and a great retraction from the sport we all love so much.
And if Qantas and it’s woke management don’t like it – see you later. Rugby is far bigger than Qantas and far more resilient. Let them take their pennies elsewhere. With God’s help we’ll find bigger and better sponsors.

I am sure Israel has given a clear message of the Gospel and of Jesus’ power to save us from eternal loss. He has reached all Australians and indeed all the world with his testimony— something Billy Graham loved to do. He gave his message and lost his job to reach millions who never go near a church. He even reached Aussies who attend churches which are bordering on Apostasy. Would to God we all had that courage when the opportunity presents itself. Shame on the negative minded organisations and banks etc who have nothing wholesome to offer

More than the issue of freedom of speech is the way that the Word of God is now so foreign to Australians ; and yet it still does the job of unsettling the sinner such that they object and want to get rid of it and anyone who brings it into the open. It could be said that Australians are mostly Biblically clueless and just don’t understand at all that these words have spoken through the ages and formed the whole western culture that underpins their expansive rights and freedoms. Homosexuals and their advocates have drawn attention to themselves by being so uncertain about their position in relation to the Biblical paraphrase – the mention of judgement and hell is very unsettling for sinners.

We saw Israel last night on TV talking with Alan Jones and Peta Credlin and we want to thank him for being a true witness to who Jesus is and what it means to be a Christian. This morning we read a passage in Acts 5:8-15 telling of Stephen’s witness before the Sanhedrin…it was so like Israel’s situation .Stephen didn’t look for trouble but he was “a man full of God’s grace and power…full of wisdom and the Spirit” but people opposed him and conspired against him, misrepresented him and told lies about him, but when the Jews condemned him, “they saw that his face was like the face of an angel”. That was you last night Israel…God bless you. We know God has His Hand on you… you have been chosen for such a time as this. God bless you and use you…Praying for you every day Brother.

We do not know what is going through Scomo’s mind, what turmoil is going on in his head wondering what he should do. He is not Donald Trump nor does he have that kind of mandate and power.
May I ask that we pray for the executive branch of governments in our country who are the force behind the politicians and are the ones who manipulate all policy.
What we have seen in Israel and Maria is opportunity for each of us to take up our cross and follow the Master in our places of work and social circles. Rise up for Jesus!

I am NOT a Rugby fan, and I must confess that until recently I didn’t know who Israel Folau was – I knew absolutely nothing about him – in fact, I’m not sure I had even heard of him.

However, I am a Bible believing Christian and I support him in the stance he has taken.
Sadly, we should not be surprised by the persecution that Israel is being subjected to, because Jesus told this will (not might) happen.

John 15:18 “ If the world hate you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you.”

Luke 21:17 “And ye shall be hated of all men for My Name’s sake.”

2 Timothy 3:12 “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

Also, Luke 6:22, 1 John 3:13, Mark 13:13, John 15:18, John 16:33, and other verses.

Israel’s “crime” was that he shared his beliefs on his personal outlet – he was following the example of the watchman in Ezekiel 33:1-9 – especially Ezekiel 33:3 and 33:9.

If we see someone we believe is in danger – or heading into danger – we have a duty to warn them. This can apply to many situations – such as if someone is swimming in a crocodile infested river, if they are sleeping and their house is on fire, taking illegal drugs, safety at work, and so on. It is then up to that person to decide if they need to heed our warning – or ignore it.

Israel’s “crime” was that he shared his beliefs on his personal outlet – he was following the example of the watchman in Ezekiel 33:1-9 – especially 33:3 and 33:9.

What Israel Folau shared was from The Bible – these are the Words of God – and NOT the words of Israel Folau – and he shared them in love – not hate.
Yet the response Israel has received has been one of hate – and not love.
Each person can make up their own mind as to whether they will listen to what Israel has shared – or ignore it.

I find it especially interesting when atheists are defending Israel Folau’s right to freedom of speech.
While I obviously strongly disagree with an atheist’s belief, I also strongly support the right of an atheist to have – and to share – that belief.

There are many people I know who have a very different viewpoint to me in regard to beliefs, lifestyle etc and in some instances their views are the exact opposite to mine.
However, I support the right of that person to have – and share – their view.

I am praying that The LORD Jesus will strengthen and encourage Israel Folau at this time.

God’s Word is telling us the real fact re living a self-directed ‘live for self’ life!

God has put before each person rescue and healing by way of choosing immediate 100% eternal life guided and empowered alongside God and 0% on this world’s anchoring ways.

The choice is simple: A person chooses either to go 100% with God or not!!

The Bible passage that Israel Folau quoted illustrates the earthly life choices which securely anchors folk in the material earth. Homosexual behaviour is an earthly self-choice.

God tells us that homosexual behaviour choice is a strong self-destruction choice but Jesus will help in overcoming all the anchors!

Choosing to be so antagonistic to God’s word is not smart and a person tries to tell people not to speak God’s word?

Then that person is forced by lack of wisdom to retreat to commanding us DON’T SAY THAT!

Get real and get saved NOW.

My brother was a homosexual and unfortunately died from AIDS at 32.. I loved him regardless. He turned away from that lifestyle at 22 after being ‘saved’ and attending Hillsong Church before he was diagnosed with HIV years later. When he became a Christian I had never seen him so happy and at peace. God loves us all and we are all sinners but there are consequences to us continuing to live our lives knowingly sinning. Bad things happened to my brother as a child which led him into homosexuality – looking for love and acceptance. A lot of friends in my twenties were gay and they have shared the same stories.. Israel Folau stated his beliefs which I share with him. I committed myself to walk with Jesus after he died because I wanted the joy that he had shared with me. Israel warned people out of love and concern, but this has been distorted by the haters of this world… I pray all will see the truth and realize that we all deserve the freedom to speak what we believe regardless of who we are and what we believe.

I am really fed up with hearing about corporate bullying and hypocrisy. As a matter of principle, I no longer fly with Qantas. My last international trip, I could have flown with Qantas from Brisbane to Dubai to Manchester. Instead, I chose British Airways, which involved flying to Sydney, then Singapore, then London and on to Manchester. It was a long and arduous trip and a personal sacrifice of my own convenience. I am genuinely sorry not to support our national airline and Australian workers, but I felt that I had to make a stand, even if the loss of my patronage doesn’t make a great difference to the Qantas budget.

Having just read this article and learned about HCF denouncing Maria Folau’s support of her husband, I have written to HCF expressing my concerns and disappointment. Although I have been satisfied with my HCF membership so far, depending on the corporate response, I will look for another health fund.

Thank you Mark Powell and Canberra Declaration for posting this article. Without it, I would not have known about the actions of HCF. I hope that contacting HCF causes people to rethink their corporate policies.

We must financially support Folau and his legal fight against RA, for all our sake’s, whether we are Christians or not. And just as important, as a warning to CORPORATIONS, their CEO’s and their boards that assuming ALL Australians support their anti-Christian, anti-morality, anti-FAMILY political madness is a huge mistake and will cost them dearly.

Sad day when so few think they can speak on behalf of so many and get it wrong! Waiting to see what our government and those elected to represent the people are going to do about this! We need to have clear guidelines that ensure that those representing companies do not overreach their authority! The CEO of a company or corporation is there to ensure those selected to do their work do it well and in good faith whilst at work or representing their company at work events. They can’t own individual lives unless of course we have returned to the dark ages of slavery … or have we?

This was a battle that had to come. It is much better now than later. Surely, Israel Folauh has a right to express his own beliefs in his own time. Even if you believe those beliefs or not, providing that they do not provoke violence, you should be able to express them. Rugby Australia needs to take a step back. Do its sponsors have the right to say who plays on the Australian team of our nation. Israel Folau is an elite athlete and his ability should qualify him for selection. I pray for Israel Folau and his wife Maria. I pray that God gives them the strength to endure this ordeal. I pray also for our leaders in their decision making. This case is about fundamental rights and as a citizen of this country I pray for our fundamental rights to be respected.

Well done Izzy and Maria. I pray for strength to endure. The battle is not ours. Gods blessing on you and your Whanau.

I’m sure that Scomo needs no reminding of the quiet Aussies who helped him over the line during the last election. It is not appropriate for the PM to be publicly backing one side or the other when a High Court case is imminant. Rugby Australia will have an awkward battle ahead of them to try and get a result in their favour. Supposing they are successful, the collateral damage will be immense to their brand. Scomo will take the path of ensuring religious freedom in upcoming parliamentary legislation. If he can do that history will judge him to have kept a wise path in a difficult path

I am dismayed to find that a CEO of an Australian company can sack someone for stating their religious beliefs, especially while quoting from the Holy Bible, from which I believe our Australian laws were founded. I am disgusted when I read how bigoted and nasty people can be, especially when they feel they have a right to be so. This man, Israel has every right to sue his former employer if he feels he has been unfairly treated. Am I wrong in thinking Australians have the right to free speech? Isn’t this what all the fuss is about?
