Day 6: A Covenant for All Generations
Intention
God’s loving plan is to draw all people into His family, into the divine life of the Holy Trinity. May Christians fulfil our daily mission to accompany souls to Heaven.
Scripture
“This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come.”—Genesis 9:12
“We worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.”—John 4:22
Reflection
A covenant is not a contract. Contracts can be broken. A covenant is an eternally binding exchange of persons, such that the other person is received into your family and remains a part of it forever. What an honour that God, the All-Holy One, longs for each and every one of us to become part of His communion of love, while respecting our free will to decline His marvellous invitation!
Throughout salvation history, as recorded in the Scriptures, we see God first extending His covenant invitation to our first parents, Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:23-24; Malachi 2:14). Then He expands His invitation as humanity multiplies: from the first married couple to the family of Noah (Genesis 9:9-17), who remained faithful in a world awash with sin; then to Abraham – the father of the Jewish people – and his descendants or tribe (Genesis 17:1-10); followed by Moses and the Jewish nation (Exodus 34:10, 24); finally, there is the covenant promised through Jeremiah and fulfilled by Jesus (Jeremiah 31:31-34), for all the world to know God and enter into His kingdom.
With each covenant, God revealed more of Himself, until His final and full revelation in the Person of His Son, Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Men broke each covenant and suffered the curses due, but God remained faithful to every covenant and showers us with the blessings assigned to each one – chiefly, that we have become His chosen people, to live with Him eternally. What great news this is!
If you had the cure for coronavirus, you would surely share it with all the world, would you not? God has offered us an even better cure – salvation (etymology: Latin – salus, health) from our sins through the Precious Blood of Jesus, offered on the cross, guaranteeing us triumph over death. He has commanded us to teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Holy Trinity (Matthew 28:19). Get excited and share the Good News with everyone!
Prayer
Almighty and ever-living God, You sent Your only Son into the world to free us from sin and draw us into new life with You. May we ever honour Your gracious and merciful gift to us, that we be worthy bearers of the name “Christian”; thus, may we be salt and light in the world, leading others to a deep and abiding relationship with You. Thank You for entrusting us with the mission to make disciples of all nations; grant us the grace to fulfil this solemn duty, that through us You may inspire every soul we meet to know, love and serve You, that they may enter into eternal life and taste of the heavenly banquet, the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. Amen.

Hearing and receiving the word generate action. Together, by the grace of Christ, they open the way for his presence to break through — and for his word to touch others and produce lasting fruit. Only the received word becomes fruitful.
